New York: s.p., 1972
10 x 24cm commercial envelope which is hand addressed by Johnson to Phil Weidman and has six deliberately applied Thomas Jefferson stamps such that they are looking at the name of the recipient. Over written in green on the stamps is the text ‘Stella Manipulation’ in green and on the side of the envelope on the front is also written ‘ 3rd n.y.c.s. meeting june 3’ also in Johnson’s hand. On the reverse there is an original small pencil drawing by Johnson – of a three dimensional box with the word DARK written inside it and also an address for Ron Peetz in Del Paso in blue ink (also Johnson’s handwriting).
JOINT PRESUMABLY AS ISSUED:
Johnson, Ray
TWO SMALL TYPICAL JOHNSON MAIL ART ITEMS.
Firstly – a scissor cut 8 x 14cm sealed back of an envelope which has been rubber stamped ‘COLLAGE BY RAY JOHNSON’ and with a cutting from a dictionary defining the word ‘Thermostat’ which has been scotch taped to the paper and an address along side another rubber stamping of a sheep. An address – in Canada (that of General Idea?) has been written by an unknown hand in blue ink. Secondly another piece seemingly taken from the same cut up envelope – 8 x 13cm – again rubber stamped ‘COLLAGE BY RAY JOHNSON’ but here with a typewritten piece of paper with the artist’s name and address on it which has been scotch taped to the paper. Together a typical mail art work which doubles as a hand made announcement for the third New York Correspondance (sic) Meeting ‘which was denoted as being ‘For Anna May Wong’ which took place in the New York Cultural Center and was apparently one of the few meetings video-taped for posterity. Price is for all three items as a group.
