Ben Vautier - Unoriginal Sins

UNTITLED (FLYING SAUCER). UNIQUE ARTWORK. 1962. A VERY EARLY WORK FROM THE FESTIVAL OF MISFITS.

19cm dia. (approx) x 13cm, mixed media - found metal and plastic children's toy, paint. An unique work by the Fluxus artist which was created as part of his installation in the window of the Gallery One where he slept for the duration of the show - the appropriated children's toy has been handpainted by Ben in black (around the body) and the bulbous windscreen has been painted white and Ben's name painted on the top. The Festival of Misfits was the earliest of Fluxus events in Britain and works from that exhibition are extremely hard to find. This work was purchased indirectly from the Gallery along with other material. Fine condition although there is a dent in the body of the toy which may or may not have pre-existed but the paint is unaffected.

Includes most of the significant Fluxus artists and others such as Robert Rauschenberg and major galleries. An unusual and probably very rare item. The sheets are all 33 x 21cmn, 1pp and stapled together but loose in the outer wrapper. VG+. Rare early Fluxus documentation.

n.p. (Nice): s.p. (Vautier), n.d. (1966) Two hand cut adhesive labels which Ban used in various posters and works - printed on a larger sheet and then cut with scissors. Similar examples can be found on various items from the artist in the period to publicise a happening event. The texts are 'Vous avez trouve/"Quelquechose"' and "Quelquechose"' /A l'artistique/27 Bd Dubouchage/Le 27 Mars a 20H.30 - prix 3F". Slight browning to the second label else apart from the uneven cuts made by the scissors both are in VG condition. Price is for both together.

LE CEDILLE QUI SOURIT. 1965. WITH EARLY VERSION OF LONG POEME COURT A TERMINER BY FILLIOU.

Villefranche-sur-mer: La Cedille Qui Sourit, n.d. (1965) 21 x 15cm, 9pp (single sided sheets) bound with rivets within card wrappers. The front card cover has plasticised left side to stop the rivets from damaging the paper and a rubber stamped title and address. A single number of this artist's book issued by Robert Filliou and George Brecht from their shop in Villefranche-sur-mer where they sold object multiples, art and books. The covers of the books are very similar between different publications but the internal pages differ. Here is a foreword by Alocco and an early version of "OBJET: Long poeme court a terminer chez soi de Robert Filliou" (which was republished many times by Filliou in different versions) followed by 7 pages of small b/w photographs of Ben and his shop in Nice. VG+ condition - a rare and early Fluxus publication.

Formerly folded else in fine estate. This copy was formerly in the collection of Ben Vautier as can be seen by the "Fluxus Nice - Ben" rubber stamp impression found on the front cover. TOUT No. 7. 1965. WITH HANDWRITTEN ADDITION TO ONE PAGE. ONE OF 250 COPIES.

Nice: Centre de Art Total (the artist), n.d. (1965) 21.2 x 16.7cm, 48pp plus brown paper covers with printed "TOUT" and hand addition by Vautier noting it was nr 7. Bound by metal rivets. A single number of Ben's irregular journal which often differed from example to example. Pages are offset printed, mimeographed, often with collage elements and on different paper stock. Unusually in this copy one page has the word "Devil" written by Ben in red ink in a box with below it the text: "ecrivez ici n'importe quoi" (write anything here) to make a small unique work. There is an article by Jean-Jacques Lebel "Le happening, une mise au point par J.J. Lebel" and a poem by Michael Alocco "Composition no. X" The foreword notes only 250 copies were released - 100 in Paris, 100 in the USA and 50 in Nice. The spine of the cover has a number of closed tears but is complete and the book has the original rivets in place. Internally VG+. Very scarce.

A single number of Ben's irregular journal which often differed from example to example. Pages are offset printed, or mimeographed, often with collaged elements and on different paper stock. This copy has an object multiple in the form of a white unprinted envelope which is tipped on and with the word "Ouvert/Open) below it. Inside there is nothing. There is short article by Michael Alocco "L'oeuf a la Coque". The book has the original rivets in place although one is slightly lose on front cover. Internally VG+. Very scarce.

The contents consist of a poems by Ben in French: Une lettre de BEN (1962) / Première partie du discours prononcé par BEN à sa bande (1963), La poésie totale (1962), BEN tu es con (1963). Vers la fin cela devient triste (1966),Vers la fin cela devient cochon (1965). This example from the edition of 500 copies has a handwritten dedication in ink by Ben at the back of the book. The book has the original rivets in place if a bit loose at the front. The wallpaper wrappers have two short closed tears top and bottom of the spine but are still wrapping around and is internally VG+. Very scarce.

EIGHT EVENT CARDS IN ORIGINAL ENVELOPE SENT TO MAURICE LEMAITRE BY BEN. 1966.

Nice: s.p. (Vautier), 1966 7 x 10cm, original white envelope content of seven 6.8 x 6.8cm, 1pp event cards and one 5 x 6.5cm, 1pp event card. An original mailing from Ben to the Lettriste Maurice Lemaitre sent at the height of Fluxus activities in Nice. The cards are specific to Ben and note sent out elsewhere by Macunias or De Ridder, The envelope is stamped and franked with the date 15 -2 - 1966 with a tipped on address label. On the back is the rubber stamp impression of Ben's "Laboratoire 32 Rue Tondutti" although it is faded. Very rare early work in VG condition although the envelope shows some wear from the posting.

TOUT No....(13) 1966.

Nice: s.p. (the artist), Aout, n.d. (1966) 21.2 x 16.7cm, 16pp plus card covers with printed "TOUT" label. Bound by metal rivets. The first internal page has a small envelope tipped on content of 11 small 1pp cards: ten of the cards have single French verbs printed on them the first card has the title "10 Verbes Don't L'Action Est A Considerer Theatre Total" and is dated 1963 (the only indication of the date of the overall publication). The other pages consist of either texts by Ben (one page inserted deliberately upside down and back to front) or b/w reproductions of photographs of performances or works from 1960 0r 1962. Minor wear at extremities but overall VG+. As with all copies of Tout, this is extremely scarce especially with all inserted cards complete and in VG+ condition. From elsewhere this is designated as 13B of Tout. This may have been produced early and a similar unnumbered copy given a number later by Ben but we cannot be sure.

Nice: s.p. (the artist), Aout, n.d. (1967) 21.2 x 16.7cm, 16pp plus wall paper covers. Unbound. An untitled book in similar design to TOUT which Vautier has created from single pages (all with the holes used for binding in the rivet bound TOUT publications). Undated but the last entry in the various theoretical texts on music, theatre and cinema is 1967. JOINT: 10.5 x 14cm, printed unused TOUT label. Slight diagonal crease bottom right. This book and label was sent by Vautier to Armin Hundertmark in 1967 along with a number of other correspondence. It seems likely that this book was meant to be one of the TOUT books but Vautier failed to affix the label or number it. The label appears to be similar to that used for TOUT Nr 4 but given that was released 4 years earlier it is more likely that this was a later number of the journal.

I BEN DECLARE THAT THE FOLLOWING SIGNATURE APPLIED TO ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING GIVES IT THE STATUS OF A WORK OF TOTAL ART. 1967.

This was one of Ben's most important Fluxus works issued as his argument that his signature was enough to indicate something was art. This was a mailed example (although no stamp or franking) tp a Mr Pei Chen Owyang in NYC. VG+. Scarce.

JOINT WITH AS ISSUED: 20.5 x 18cm, 4pp musical score for a French song by J & J Mediner and lyrics by Max Francis: "Au Son Des Castagnettes". This was a found object by Ben. The work is intended to be performed ideally after music by Stravinsky, Boulez, Ravel, Debussy, and before works by Cage, Earle Brown, Bussotti, or Feldmann hence placing it between classical and much more contemp9orary "new music". Nice: S.p. (Vautier), 1968 11.3 x 14.4cm, transparent envelope with glued on address label (to Tomas Schmit In Germany) and tipped on stamp content of two 10.5 x 14cm, 1pp printed cards by Ben about correspondence art (CORRESPONDANCE = ART = IDEE) and DES GESTES, EVENMENTS, HAPPENINGS DE RUE. Additional is a colour vintage commercial postcard of the cathedral in Algers and five irregularly torn pieces of newspaper articles which are folded to fit the envelope. Finally Ben has added a short cut up section of film (4.5 x 1.5cm) with 6 frames of images of himself. An unique mail art work - similar in some respects to others sent out at the same time but each with unique contents (others do not seem to have the film strip) sent to a Fluxus friend. All in very good condition if one takes into account the roughly torn nature of some of the papers. The envelope has some minor wear from the mailing experience and the stamp is franked 1968.

Nice: Le Galerie Ben Doute de Tout, 1967 - 1971 64 different announcement and event cards issued by Ben Vautier for his Le Galerie Ben Doute de Tout where his Fluxus related activities were organised (after his record shop closed). The cards are almost all typographic with often great detail and many of which contain elements of Flxus performances and events. Typically the cards are 10.5 x 15cm, 1pp but some are smaller (typically the event cards). All were sent by Vautier to Armin Hundertmark the Berlin (and later Koln) gallerist and friend Armin Hundertmark. All fine.PRICE IS FOR ALL AS A GROUP.

NYC: Reflux, 1981 12.0 x 10.1 x 1.4cm to part transparent plastic box with printed and embossed (monogrammed) label content of 15 transparent straws. This is one of two Fluxus multiples originally conceived in 1964 by Ben Vautier. The rather rude label was designed by George Maciunas. This is one of the more scarce Reflux editions released by Barbara Moore at Bound and Unbound in the 80s where she used original vintage components along with newly sourced items to create a "continuation" edition. This is one of two variants of this multiple - the other version with torn paper, two printed photographs of holes, a knot in a string and several washers is even more hard to find. VG+.

9 x 11 x 7cm, single constructed cardboard box with a star like cut on the lid (so that the ball can be displayed on top of the box if desired) and a hand written title - "Caterina a dictate Dio. 50 E(uro)" and signed "Ben". Inside the box is a ping pong ball on which Ben has written Dieu and Dio on opposite sides of the ball in thick black ink. A 30 x 21cm, 1pp letter is also included which explains how Ben as a child asked a priest if god could be seen in everything such as an inkwell and the priest lied to him and said yes. Ben therefore suggests god can be found in a ping pong ball and created this work. the letter is again dedicated to Catrina and signed and dated 2002. All elements are VG+ although the letter is folded.

Five different original colour photographs of a Fluxus performance by Ben Vautier, Ben Patterson and Eric Andersen in paris in 2006. Uniformly 10.2 x 15.2cm. All taken by the organiser Jeff Berner. Ben prepared a piano for the work by adding internal items (a la Cage) and also painting on the outside. After the event the piano was left outside because there was no space for it in the artist's storage and despite being under a tarpaulin it rotted due to rain damage and is no more (we attempted to rescue it before the damage was too great but sadly it was a wet year in Paris).
