Hanoi: Viet Nam Courier, April 10 - August 21 1967

Sixteen separate numbers. Uniformly 39 x 27cm, 8pp self cover tabloid newspaper on white rice paper. English language propaganda newspaper printed in red and black (except 105, 109 and 110 which are black on white only). The “information weekly” which was published by the Viet Cong government in Vietnam and then smuggled into the United States for propaganda purposes. The texts are all aggressively anti-American imperialism and in particular most articles emphasise the view that the USA was losing the war in Vietnam with a great emphasis on the number of fighter jets being shot down and major assaults by the L.A.F. and all victories (no matter how minor) being celebrated. B/w photographs throughout. While not strictly illegal these newspapers had a tendency to be covertly distributed in the States and were often only really available to student activists and the alternative underground - hence an important influence on the student opposition to the war. All copies here are in very good condition although all have old soft fold marks and the corners of the pages are a very little bumped but miraculously given the quality of the paper there is little browning and no significant tears. An incomplete run but a scarce publication to find almost 50 years later.

Price is for all 16 issues

We have some duplicate numbers and may split the set up in required - please enquire.

Hanoi: Foreign Languages Publishing House, 1967

19 x 13cm, 48pp plus 4pp paper wrappers. Propaganda brochure distributed mostly in the United States reprinting a text by General Van Tien Dung, Chief of the Vietnam People’s Army General Staff where the latter predicts the eventual (and inevitable) defeat of the USA in the region. At the rear of the booklet is a list of the “major successes of the South Vietnam Armed Forces and people in Winter 1966 and Spring 1967” including “enemy raids beaten off”, “enemy communication lines hard hit”, “enemy positions and towns strongly attacked”, and “airfields fiercely and repeatedly struck”. Some water marks throughout but otherwise VG+ with little browning of the cheap white rice paper. An interesting and useful historical document illustrating the Viet Cong’s confidence at the time. In the next few months their forces launched their Tet Offensive which while being militarily very costly was a propaganda and psychological victory. Scarce underground publication.

Hanoi: Liberation editions, 1965

13 x 8.8cm, 44pp plus paper wrappers. Nguyen Huu Tho was the President of the Presidium of the Central Committee of the South Vietnam National Front for Liberation. This small propaganda booklet was published to distribute the speech given by the leader to the NFL on its 5th anniversary of its founding. There is one grainy b/w image of Nguyen making the speech as frontispiece. The speech is typical of the Viet Cong’s Marxist and anti-imperialist view - and took place in the year the first American forces (Marines) landed in Vietnam. This book was smuggled into the USA and distributed amongst student and other left political groups. Some brown marks due to past damp and a small rust stain (staple remnant from another book) on the very outer right margin of a few pages, some rusting to staple, else VG.
