WITH THE CHICKEN WIRE SLIPCASE TO THWART MEMOIRES - DEDICATION COPY

Paris: Edition Internationale Situationniste, 1961.
28 x 22cm. 34 pp. Original boards. Illustrated throughout in b/w and colour with original lithographs and various other designs by Martin. Pictorial paper over boards with a further design by Martin. Enclosed in a slipcase with the title hand stencilled in white (on black) and with an overlay of small-gauge chicken wire. First edition. One of 750 numbered examples (total edition) signed by Nash and Martin although this copy is additionally dedicated in hand above the signatures on the first page in a different colour ink by Nash to the fellow artist Johnny Skattberg and dated 1961. A striking collaborative work by the poet (Nash) and illustrator (Martin) which show the Cobra influence in Nash's illustrations to Martin's poems and evidence that Jorn was not the only artist of ability amongst the siblings when Nash was on form. Both Nash and Martin were major actors in the Situationist movement at the time of this publication and the hard-edged polemic of the work underscores this. Later the movement came to influence both the riots in Paris in 1968 but also the Punk sensibilities of detournment and cut ups - and Jamie Reid and Malcolm McLaren were both aware of both Memoires and Hanegal. A very good example of this rare book with a slight mark to the boards of the book and minor wear to the extremities of the black slipcase, both internal protecting cards are still present however which are usually missing from most copies and the chicken-wire is in perfect condition (again this is commonly damaged when copies do come on the market - as good a copy as can be found and further improved by the unusual dedication. Rare.

Frankfurt: Semantik, 1966
42.5 x 30cm, 2pp broadside - poster/manifesto of sorts published to proclaim a retrospective of the work of Gerd Winkler who had made the Zero film '0 - 0 = art' first shown in 1962 and had later contributed to the journal of the Dutch Nul Group (Nul = 0) which was affiliated to Zero. This broadside has images of two public performances by Winkler including a Happening event in Frankfurt with William B. Simmat where small paintings and drawings on paper were thrown to a small crowd down below the open windows of a tavern. On the reverse are several press cuttings and images of the artist making a 'pyro' painting by setting fire to gunpowder pressed onto a board or canvas. Fine. Very scarce Zero related material.

New York: s.p., n.d. (1963)
61 x 50.5cm, b/w original photograph showing one of the famous images from the artist's EYE BODY performance. This was one of a number of such photographs given to me by Carolee after she installed a work using these photographs in an exhibition I curated in 2011. She tore up the photos and threw them on the floor in order to make a new work which was in some sense a rejection of her youth and past (she was in her 70s when she did this). This was one of 5 photographs she did not use in the work and I was given four of the images (the other went to my assistant). The back of the photograph says "Not for sale" written by Carolee because it was a gift. . If it did not say that on the back I would be asking for double this price. So this is a very rare chance to own a part of early feminist art and a famous part at that.

In very good + condition - and we can supply a digital image of Schneemann using these photographs to make the new work in 2011 to show provenance.
