NYC: Totem Press, 1959

21 x 14cm, 40pp plus card covers. A single issue of this Beat-era literary review which has contributions by LeRoi Jones, Gilbert Sorrentino, Bruce Boyd, Robert Creeley, Kenneth Koch, George Stanley, Frank O’Hara, Gregory Corso, B. Smith, Stuart Z. Perkoff, Gilbert Sorrentino, John Ashbery, Philip Whalen, Larry Eigner, Max Finstein, Joel Oppenheimer, Diane DiPrima, Charles Olson, Edward Marshall, Joel Oppenheimer, Allen Ginsberg, Norman Bluhm, and Frank O’Hara

"Edited by Beat poet LeRoi Jones (later Amiri Baraka) and Hettie Cohen, Yugen was devoted to “A New Consciousness in the Arts and Letters.” Bringing together the Beats, Black Mountain poets, and the New York School poets of the late 1950s, Yugen took its name from the Japanese aesthetic term meaning “a profound mysterious sense of the beauty of universe … and the sad beauty of human suffering.” Cohen, later Hettie Jones, had worked at the Partisan Review and brought with her a background in little-magazine design that gave Yugen an air of respectability and professionalism. The contents represented a new and untraditional approach to poetry. Jones and Cohen also founded Totem Press, which published important early books by Gary Snyder, Philip Whalen, Allen Ginsberg, Michael McClure, Diane di Prima, Jack Kerouac, and many others. Like Yugen, Totem Press books typically feature calligraphic covers that mix American abstract expressionism and Japanese Zen painting."

Slight browning/light sunning to card covers on right and some rust to staples else VG+. Scarce.

Paris: Serge Velnez, July 19, 1966
Five printed mimeo-sheets together with holograph announcement. Housed in original mailing envelope (hand-written). Scarce documentation of a Lebel co-organized Happening Event, featuring a reading by Allan Ginsberg ('Footnote to Howl'), which is included here in Lebel's French translation (presumably, the first thus) + a detailed step by step chronology of the Happening. Fine estate in slightly creased envelope. A rare document.

San Francisco: Fantasy Records, 1958
Standard 12 inch LP with spoken word/poetry tracks including the famous title poem along with Goya in Amrica, William Butler yeats on the Third Avenue EL and The Poet as an Acrobat. The sleeve is not in good shape with a tear most of the way along the top and a part tear repaired with tape along the bottom and two rubber stamp owner's names (George A. Cohen) on the back with some marks and slightly browned. The record appears only to have minor surface scratches. The colour of the vinyl is red however which is slightly harder to find. The inner sleeve has been added by ourselves and is modern. Inserted is the Fantasy records back catalogue leaflet. Priced to reflect this below average condition.
