Koln: De/Collage (Vostell), 1962 - 1967

Six separate numbers - a complete run (although Vostell did later add an exhibition catalogue and designate it as De/collage 7 despite it being somewhat different in content to these copies) of this assmblage/artist's journal that predated vTRE and other Fluxus related artist publications.

The collection here consists of:

Decoll/age 1

Koln: Decoll/age (Vostell): June 1962

26 x 22cm, 32pp double fold out pages plus card covers with folds. The first number of the series with original contributions by Arthur Köpcke, George Maciunas, Benjamin Patterson, Nam June Paik, La Monte Young, Volf Vostell and others. Slight wear to the right hand side of the folded wrappers else VG+.

Decoll/age 2

Koln: Decoll/age (Vostell): November 1962

Internal pages are mimeographed and stapled. Edited by Dick Higgins - the whole consisting of his "The Broadway Opera" translated into German. The front cover is a b/w photograph of the poet/artist outside a German cinema. With original publisher's wrap-around band - which is torn but complete and with original scotch tape closure still there but the glue has lost its adhesion. Very rare number from the series especially with the band.

Inserted: subscription leaflet for Decoll/age 1 and 2.

Decoll/age 3

Koln: Decoll/age (Vostell): December 1962

Caspari, Christo, Jed Curtis, Henry Flint, Dick Higgins, Gyogy Ligetti, Nam June Paik, Jan Voss, Vostell, F. Mon, Pera, F. Crowbridge, JP Wilhelm. The internal sheets include various types of printing: offset, mimeograph, screen printing. Illustrated throughout. VG+ although some wear/minor emerging tears along spine of the wrappers.

Other works are by René Block, Claus Bremer, Henning Christiansen, Hans Joachim Dietrich, Ludwig Gosewitz, Dick Higgins, Bernhard Höke, Allan Kaprow, Franz Mon, Benjamin Patterson, Eckart Rahn, Gerhard Rühm, Vagelis Tsakiridis, Ben Vautier, Wolf Vostell, ZAJ Group (which is signed). The Vostell work is a sealed sheet of printed paper with yellow dust/sand inside the sealed plastic and is complete and undamaged here. VG+ overall although the portfolio card folder is a little damaged as the internal uneven sheets have put pressure on the outer card. This is a scarce item to find in good condition and the Beuys contribution is particularly prized.

Artist's book issued in 230 signed and numbered copies (by Roth in the colophon) which was a deluxe copy of Hans Jorg Mayer's Poesie magazine (here nr 3/4, the last number published) - some copies with additional unique elements such as here.

This book has a unique photo-collage (a cut up photo of the Rhine reflecting buildings which is signed ("D.R.") on a single page which is followed by a unique drawing in pen by Roth which is dated "72" so bound in later. The drawing (of a kneeling humanoid figure) is on a page that originally may have been an envelope or a paper shopping bag also contains what appears to be a slice of cheese which has made the drawing partially three-dimensional due to folds and bumps in the paper. The drawing and cheese were not found in all copies - in fact, a small number of copies have veal in the page rather than cheese. The text of the book is an extened "shit" poem by Roth and a text "Der Ich, man, ein Jemand und Ich - in Basel am Rhein"

The colophon at the back of the book is (as noted above) signed and dated 1968 - this is number 170 from the entire edition.

The book is bound in leather (which may have come from veal or goat) - as manufactured by Roth's friend Rudolf Rieser from whose estate this book has come.

There are around seven pages stained by the cheese as it deteriorated which has unavoidably affected the drawing (which was probably Roth's intent) but the other book pages are VG+. The leather dustjacket has one small hole on the front and very minor chipping at the spine else all is VG+.

Unique version of what was already a very hard to find book.

Edinburgh: Demarco Gallery, 1970

First edition. 43 x 29cm, 44 pp plus outer cover. Stapled. The catalogue for the exhibition of Dusseldorf Artists during the 1973 Edinburgh International Festival with original contributions by Beuys, Brecht, Filliou, Knoebel, Palermo, Polke, Richter, Rinke, Roth, Ruthenbeck, Spoerri, Walther and many others in this important vanguard publication.

The (unwieldy) title by Thomkins was chosen because of its palindromic character.

Noted as an artist's book in both Polke's (nr 13) and Richter's catalogue raisonnes the truth is that neither had anything to do with the design of the publication which was entirely created locally from supplied photographs by an Edinburgh designer who worked for the printers, the Lutton Press - nonetheless this exhibition and publication is also notable for it being Beuys' first British exhibition. The cover of this publication is somewhat marked and browned with possible nascent foxing and the staples a little rusted but internally this is VG+.

A scarce document which was later reprinted by Demarco to try to cash in on its scarcity.
