Strauss, had recently made a speech in which he argued that the SDP and the left would only have a chance of winning if the state and, above all, the state finances were in ruins. Chancellor candidate Kohl refused to disagree with this statement saying that he was not leaving Strauss out in the cold. Staeck parodies their support for each other with the slogan: "Christian Democrats! Your future lies in chaos". VG+.
