First Czech edition of this 'digest' version of the Surrealist's Le Negre (1927), as translated by the Devetsil artist Adolf Hoffmeister, who also contributes the cover design. Some minor wear to wrappers, one small brown stain to front cover (1.3cm dia. approx.)  else a very good and partly unopened copy. Rare thus.

22.5 x 15.7, approx 100pp, Three separate volumes bound together in period boards. First editions of this literary journal (apparently published annually) which published many of the dramatic works of authors associated with Devetsil.

Herein are Hoffmeister's MLADI VE HRE (1935), Frederich Wolf's JOHN D. DOBYVA SVETA; Seifert's prologue for PISEN PISEN (Song of Songs), a translation of Shakespeare by E.F. Burian (who has also contributed several theatrical reviews amongst other texts) and a Halas poem BALADA O BEZHLAVE KRALOVNE and other short texts including musical contributions by Reiner and others. Some browning to pages, this is an ex library copy and one inoffensive (even helpful) pencil annotation to one internal page clarifying a censored (overprinted by the publishers) text otherwise very good. Pages are a uneven in size but probably as per issued. Scarce.<br />
