Berlin: Verlag Der Sturm, 1919

25 x 16.5cm, 30pp. Original blue wrappers printed yellow. With seventeen plates (including tipped-in colour frontispiece by Chagall and a small b/w block print by Kandinsky as frontispiece) reproducing work by Kandinsky, Marc, Severini, Leger, Klee, Molzahn, Muche, Schwitters and others. A reprinted essay from Der Sturm as a separate pamphlet intended to promote those artists in favour at the magazine.

Walder was in fact the pseudonym of Georg Lewin, gallerist and the founder of Der Sturm and promoter of German and other expressionism. A VG example with only minor browning to the internal pages (printed on cheap paper) and some browning around the extremities of the oversize wrappers but this is as good an example as one is likely to find.

Prague: Vortel, 1922

23.5 x 16cm. 202pp. Hard boards. Editors: Jaroslav Seifert and Karel Teige. Profusely illustrated in b/w after works by Archipenko, Chagall, Grosz, Kisling, Leger, Modigliani, Survage, Teige, et. al. Original printed wrappers with central black circular emblem and bound into vintage plain brown and spien printed boards as issued. First edition of the manifest almanac of the vanguard revolutionist Czech 'Devetsil' group, as edited by the poet Seifert and the designer and theorist Teige.

Initiated in the Modern Cultural Union (Prague), 'Devetsil' was ground zero for all Czech artistic and literary avant-garde activity during the 1920's and early 30's, and was (according to Teige): " a focus for socialist and revolutionary trends in culture". Text contributions by Seifert, Teige, Nezval, Honzl, Goll, Biebl, et. al. + a short trilingual summary (German, French and Russian) of the group's aims as appendix.

Some minor expert repairs and reinforcements to wrappers and some large stains to the rear covers, and the evidence of rough paper on the end papers where an ex-libris label has been removed before else a very good example of this crucial document. Rare.

Paris. L'Union des Artistes Russes a Paris, 1924

65 x 24cm. The published double-sided broadside programme for one of a series of annual Russian avant garde balls. This copy printed black on pink and contains one costume design by Gontcharova (the final garb intended to be made out of paper) and a vignette by Barth of Apollo (to whom the ball was consecrated). Artists credited for the decoration within the hall include Braque, Burliuk, Chagall, Delaunay, Dufy, Foujita, Galanis, Gontcharova, Gris, Leger, Larionov, Laurencin, Matisse, Man Ray, Marinetti, Mayakovski, Picasso, Picabia and Zadkine.

The programme notes that Tzara was to contribute a "spectacle sur l'Echeelle" with 2 actresses, one actor and the author. Foukita offers a dance. Part of a short musical score by Tailleferre is also reproduced. The event was a massive undertaking and the general public were invited.

One of an annual series of such avante garde spectaculars. Good condition despite some creasing and some short tears around the fold. Very scarce fragile item.
