Copenhagen: Sommerudstillingen, 1963

24.5 x 19cm, 36pp plus wrappers. The programme for this famous Danish early Fluxus festival complete held in June 1963 which was organised in part by Eric Andersen as well as Jens Jorgen Thorsen and Arthur Kopcke. Texts and poems by all three artists alongside b/w illustrations/collages and a short essay by Birger Hansen. Adverts include mention of a concert by Thorsen and Jorgen Plaetner. VG+.

JOINT WITH AS ISSUED

SOMMERUDSTILLINGEN 63. 1963. FLUXUS FESTIVAL.

Copenhagen: Sommerudstillingen, 1963

24 x 19cm, 8pp. Programme for the week of events which notes a concert by John Cage and David Tudor as the main concert - with a Fluxus action evening two days later consisting of performances from Eric Andersen, Henning Christiansen (2), Dich (sic) Higgins and John Davidsen. And the day after more by Andersen. On the 12 June 1963 - there was a "Co-ritus Koncert" by Jens Jorgen Thorsen with help by Jorgen Nas and Allan Hardy Strid. And on the final night - "Fluxus - aften" by Arthur Kopcke, John Davidsen, Henning Christiansen, Eric Andersen. An exhibition of art works by various artists are also listed with prices.

An interesting very early coming together of Danish experimental artists who are usually more closely aligned with CoBra and the Situationists and with Fluxus participants.

Both items are in VG+ condition although the front cover of the programme has a browning across the front top sheet (see photograph).

Rare.

NYC: Everest, 1964
Standard 12 inch 33rpm LP - the second volume of this electronic performance recorded in a L.A. art gallery: essentially a real-time sound collage of radio and tv samples, pre-recorded found sounds, and live recordings from microphones placed around and outside of the gallery (including audience conversations, sounds from the bar, and street sounds near the entrance to the building which resulted in a live, chance-derived noise music which Cage created/discovered as a parallel to the newly emerging musique concrete tape music of Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Luc Ferrari, Bernard Parmegiani, and Vladimir Ussachevsky. The beginning of the record includes a spoken introduction ("In the grooves of this record is the sound of John Cage...") which details the techniques used in the performance.

NYC: Columbia Records, 1957
Standard 12inch 33rpm LP in pictorial sleeve. Wolpe was a student of Anton Webern, a devotee of Schoenberg and Busoni, and an influential teacher of Morton Feldman, Ralph Shapey, Herbert Brun, David Tudor, and Charles Wuorinen; having taught at the legendary Black Mountain College with John Cage, David Tudor, and Lou Harrison.

Additionally this is one of David Tudor's earliest recordings, and his second LP ever. Other performers on this important document of 20th century American classical music are flutist Samuel Baron, pianist Maro Ajemian, violinist Anahid Ajemian, percussionist Elden Bailey, harpist Lucile Lawrence, cellist Claus Adam and singers Arline Carmen and Leon Lishner. Hovhaness conducts his own composition 'Upon Enchanted Ground'. The record is in VG+ condition (a few light 'unfeelable' scuffs/swashes) in a mostly VG sleeve with light shelf wear and the seams reinforced with clear tape though they do not appear to be split. There is also a promo stamp and small amount of writing on back of the cover which shows an image of a praying Jewish man. Priced to reflect the condition of the sleeve.

NYC, Judson Hall, 1963
Works by Earle Brown, John Cage, Morton Feldman, Charlotte Moorman, La Monte Young, Max Neuhaus, Frederic Rzewski, David Tudor and Nicholas Zumbra were performed over a period of one month. Other works included Giuseppe Chiari and Toshi Ichiyanagi. These concerts evolved into (and were de facto the first of) the annual Avant Garde festivals that Moorman organised - an event that eventually became a massive undertaking with 100s of participants and unfolding works in all manner of media not only music. Folded - as issued - very scarce document.

NYC: Carl Fischer Concert Hall, n.d. (1952)

9.9 x 21.2cm, 1pp. Announcement card (typographic, b/w) for this concert by Tudor. The card notes that the first programme will included works by Earle Brouwn, John Cage and Christian Wolff and the second programme by Pierre Boulez, Olivier Messiaen, Morton Feldman and Stefan Wolfe. The card notes “many first New York performances on both programmes”. Importantly this concert marked only the second ever performance of John Cage’s 4’33” - preceded only by a prior outing in Woodstock on August 29, 1952 - this performance being only 8 months later. 4’33” is a key moment in the history of new music - challenging the very notion of what music is. This is the first and only documentation available for this historic moment - there was no publicity material for the Woodstock concert. Fine condition. Clearly very rare.

NYC: "One Day Festival of the Contemporary Arts", 1953
44 x 47cm, 1pp. Black on newsprint. Poster brochure advertising a festival concept, developed by John Cage and David Tudor, designed to feature recitals, readings, dance classes, lectures, and panel discussions. Composers, musicians, poets, and thinkers on board for the festival of "experimental" works included Cage, Tudor, Merce Cunningham, and Mary Caroline Richards. Rather than being a poster for a particular planned event, this "brochure" was designed to advertise the concept of such an event to colleges and universities. It was 1953, and Cage was meeting with a wall of rejections for grants, fellowships, and even work in animated films or as a writer for magazines. The Package Festival was as experimental as any of the composer's work, literally an idea that Cage hoped would offer financial support not to only himself, but to the growing number of contemporaries whom we would ultimately make famous on an international scale. In his biography of Cage, Kenneth Silverman notes: "The festival offered a dance program by Cunningham, a recital of contemporary music by Tudor, and a lecture on "Artaud and New Theatre"--three programs a day for three days. Each event had its own price tag, from $750 for the dance down to $100 for the lecture. But if a client bought more than one event a discount began to operate, making the discounted cost for the entire three day festival $1250. ...the Package Festival found no sponsors at the time...[and] Cage left Stony Point to concertize and lecture for two months abroad.” Folded for storage else VG+. Rare.
