The exhibition catalogue for this important exhibition of cubist works as shown at the London Gallery organised by ELT Mesens and filled with works by Penrose, Lee Miller, Gistac Kahnweiler and others. Foreword by Robert Melville and contributions translated by Mesens from Apollinaire, Breton and lengthy notes also by Mesens. B/w illustrations throughout and twenty-six black and white plates after works by Picasso, Braque, Leger, Gris, De La Fresnaye, Picabia, Marcoussis and Masson. Placing cubism at the centre of avant garde development the catalogue also critiques the movement from a later surrealist position - Braque being oh so slightly dismissed (especially by Breton) and Picasso regarded as part of the inner circle (which given his adherence to surrealism and communism post-cubism is not so surprising). A couple of faint coffee cup stains on the front covers, which do not detract that greatly, else VG. Scarce.

17 x 11cm, Card folder content of 4pp, 17 x 11cm paper insert with two full colour, full page images of one work by each artist and internally a short text. Exhibition catalogue / announcement leaflet for this joint show. Later Eemans was condemned by Marien and other Belgium surrealists for being 'fascist'. Near fine.

Three separate numbers. Uniformly 49 x 32cm, 8pp. Full colour throughout. While strictly a post-surrealist publication, could easily be considered in the same stream of history and certainly quotes surrealist texts (eg ELT Mesens) and reproduces works such as those by Magritte.

The title "Coupures" which translates as "cuts" explains the format: with many short, précis and selections. The design is modern and uses all the benefits of 70s typography and technology: something clearly disallowed their predecessors.

Nr 1 has texts on Bernadette Devlin (of the terrorist official IRA), Sharon Tate, a poem by Legrand, and a Man Ray work alongside one of the first reproduced images of a group of the Becher's "Sculptures anonymes" as well as anti-Gaulleist diatribes.

Nr 3 a poem by Mesens and 7: Bory, Breton and Heartfield. All folded but otherwise very good.

15x 10.7cm. 2pp. First edition of this journal in postcard format. Texts by Magritte, Mesens, Colinet, Lecomte, Piqueray and Scutenaire recto and by Puel and Wergifosse verso. One of the most difficult of the card to find from within the series of 13 numbers. Fine.

20. x 20. 5 cm. 4pp tract black on green. A political leaflet distributed as one of the last hurrahs of the most politicised section of the surrealists. The text is a diatribe against the atomic bomb. Signed by (amongst others) Mesens, Toyen, Mansour, Peret, Breton and Lebel. Very good apart form a few small closed tears around the extremities and some unavoidable fading of the green.

This copy was previously owned by Toyen and is stamped "Toyen Succession".

28 x 22cm, 4pp. Jointly authored response to the "affair Aragon" published by the Belgium surrealists on January 30, 1932. The Stalinist Aragon had broken with the surrealists after Humanitie (the mouthpiece of the french Communist Party) had bizarrely attacked Breton for defending his former friend after the publication of "Red Front" by Aragon which had been prosecuted by the French state because of its call to soldiers to rebel. Former vertical and horizontal creases but otherwise very good.
