Paris, Les Editions Premires, 1949

21 x 14.5cm, 190pp. Original wrappers. First edition of this quasi-autobiographical musing on religion and the surrealist tendency for blasphemy. Gengenbach was an early surrealist (contributing to early periodicals) but felt the pull of the Catholic church all of his life (having been in a seminary as a youth). By 1949 he had more or less broken with Breton (but unusually amicably by the latter's standards) and this book alongside his 'L'experience demonique' (also published in the same year) are his testimonies to a final capitulation to the church; albeit a mystical aspect of the church. A numbered copy from the release of 1,450 numbered examples. Near fine. Scarce.
