Original lithograph by Vitrac and others. Some wear and closed tears along edges and there is a tear right along the spine although the sheet is still attached at several points. Auction catalogue for the collection of Marie-Puck Broodthaers which contains details and colour images of around 120 items (some unique) by her father as well as other items by Marina Abramovic, Daniel Buren, Marcel Broodthaers, Marie-puck Broodthaers, James Lee Byars, Robert Desnos, Marcel Duchamp, Fernand Leger, Yves Klein, Arthur Kopcke, Wolfgang Laib, Rene Magritte, and Dieter Roth. Very useful reference. VG+.

A sequential and substantial run of this important avant garde revue (edited by Paul Dermee and Michel Seuphor) bound together in a single period binding (cloth covered boards with embossed leather label on spine). 27 x 17.5cm, most numbers are unpaginated although most are approximatly 50 - 72pp. and volume 28 is, in fact, numbered 2320 to 2391.

Many important contributions by the major progressive literary figures of the time and there are many texts on important contemporaries such as Poe. Illustrated throughout with colour and b/w plates of architecture and art including many cubist works after Picasso and Leger (for example).

Particularly important here is issue nr 26 which was solely dedicated to the recently deceased figure of Guillaume Apollinaire with reproductions after drawings, watercolors, manuscripts and letters by the poet, seven portraits of him by Pablo Picasso and two by Louis Marcoussis (one of which is an original lithograph printed in red) + other related facsimile documents and photographs. The special number includes the poet's short tale 'La Plante', correspondence and poems (reproduced in facsimile). Other texts by Celine Arnauld, Paul Dermee, Pierre-Albert Birot, Ivan Goll, Francis Picabia, Andre Salmon, Roch Grey, et. al. + letters to Apollinaire by Fernand Divoire, Picabia, et. al.. Alone the special number is a very scarce item but a complete run of 10 numbers is a significant find.

The original wrappers have not been retained within the binding and there is one (easily remedied) condition problem here in that the weight of the approx 750 pages bound together has caused the internal page block to fall and cleanly tear the binding down the marbled endpapers on the front side although the rear endpapers are still attached although only just - as are the laid in and bound in (here) various maps and fold out architectural documents at the back of the 10 volume run. Elsewhere the paper is browned and the odd page is slightly stressed again due to the weight of the internal page block but over all this is a very good+ run with the stated problems well within a paper conservator's or binder's ability to correct.

25 x 16.5cm, 30pp. Original blue wrappers printed yellow. With seventeen plates (including tipped-in colour frontispiece by Chagall and a small b/w block print by Kandinsky as frontispiece) reproducing work by Kandinsky, Marc, Severini, Leger, Klee, Molzahn, Muche, Schwitters and others. A reprinted essay from Der Sturm as a separate pamphlet intended to promote those artists in favour at the magazine.

Walder was in fact the pseudonym of Georg Lewin, gallerist and the founder of Der Sturm and promoter of German and other expressionism. A VG example with only minor browning to the internal pages (printed on cheap paper) and some browning around the extremities of the oversize wrappers but this is as good an example as one is likely to find.

21 x 18cm, 40pp. Original red and blue wrappers. The exhibition catalogue for this important exhibition of cubist works as shown at the London Gallery organised by ELT Mesens and filled with works by Penrose, Lee Miller, Gistac Kahnweiler and others. Foreword by Robert Melville and contributions translated by Mesens from Apollinaire, Breton and lengthy notes also by Mesens. B/w illustrations throughout and twenty-six black and white plates after works by Picasso, Braque, Leger, Gris, De La Fresnaye, Picabia, Marcoussis and Masson. Placing cubism at the centre of avant garde development the catalogue also critiques the movement from a later surrealist position - Braque being oh so slightly dismissed (especially by Breton) and Picasso regarded as part of the inner circle (which given his adherence to surrealism and communism post-cubism is not so surprising). A couple of faint coffee cup stains on the front covers, which do not detract that greatly, else VG. Scarce.

Initiated in the Modern Cultural Union (Prague), 'Devetsil' was ground zero for all Czech artistic and literary avant-garde activity during the 1920's and early 30's, and was (according to Teige): " a focus for socialist and revolutionary trends in culture". Text contributions by Seifert, Teige, Nezval, Honzl, Goll, Biebl, et. al. + a short trilingual summary (German, French and Russian) of the group's aims as appendix.

30 x 24cm, 2pp. Single issue of this announcement brochure for the Theatre des Champs Elysees which promoted a ballet by the Ballet Suedois to the music of Erik Satie ("Deux Gymnopedies" as orchestrated by Debussy and trios petites pieces Montee and "Les Danses du Piege de Meduse") and the ballet created by Blaise Cendrars "la Creation du monde" with music by Darius Milhaud).

Formerly folded into eights and slightly browned. Scarce document promoting the premiere of this work by the poet and (as with other performances at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees during the period of 1920 to 1925 when the Ballets Suedois were in residence at the theatre) Leger.
