17 x 8 x 2cm, found book (Le Blocus by Erckmann Chatrian) which has been deliberately and extensively (perhaps 40% of the original book remains) burnt by Latham and then a four pages in the middle of the book painted in red and orange.
A unique sculptural bookwork by Latham - made in 1959 - and is one of the artist's first SKOOBS (books backwards) that he later became well known for.
There is some dried white plaster on the back cover which may suggest this was mounted somewhere at some point but else it is as it is.
Early Skoobs are extremely hard to find and all are important objects in the history of conceptual art.

17 x 11.5cm, unpaginated. Original foil embossed boards. This book is a first printing of the famous German text which translates as "The influence of the mind on the body” - first published in 1908 by the pioneering psychotherapist Paul Dubois. Latham has taken this book and with the use of a drill and a jigsaw has cut a shape (a “C”) all the way through the book including both boards and all internal pages. Half way through the book (pages 50 and 51) Latham has signed the work with his surname in red ink with each word on a different right hand page as part of a dedication partly in English and partly in German - "9th and 10th December 1968 Von John Latham zu Gerd Vorhoff" . Vordhoff was an artist in Fluxus circles but more importantly the Gallerist for the Aachen Gallery which was involved in so many important events and performances including Beuys, Vostell and Paik's happenings.
This is an unique conceptual bookwork which was created in the same year as the artist's famous Still and Chew (where Clement Greenberg's book, 'Art & Culture' was reduced to a vial of liquid by chewing and the addition of acid). This deliberate desecration of one of the first books considering the role of wellbeing and mental health is a very rare conceptual artwork indeed.
The condition is fine if one accepts that the original book has had some minor condition issues (some bubbling to the covers of the boards and browning).
Unique.

London: s.p. (the artist), 1985
30 x 21 cm. 1pp offset letter printed recto only. A textual statement by Latham outlining why he has refused to pay income tax to the government because of "proof" that the latter have secretly conspired against him to stop his work. Minor tears and creases to the edges and minor fading at edges but substantially very good.
ADDED
30 x 21 cm. 1pp xeroxed letter printed recto only. A proposal for a circular open letter (written in sketchy terms for later amendment). Hand-written (in black ink) amendments and a few notes by Latham.
ADDED:
30 x 21 cm. 1pp xeroxed letter printed recto only - a second copy of the above proposal for a circular letter. Additional to it is Latham's note to an unknown recipient regarding the statement above and how it might be distributed with a draft letter. This copy of the letter is signed in black pen by Latham and has the artist's phone number. All three are interesting documents relating to the artist's state of mind during this period.

Price is for all three items as a group.
