27 x 21 cm 15 sheets of photocopies typescript printed recto only. Stapled. This publication was part of Kosuth"s series First Investigations (subtitled Art as Idea as Idea), which he began in 1966. The series was comprised of photocopies of dictionary definitions and other texts; in it he sought to demonstrate that "art" is not located in the art object, but in the idea or concept of the work.

By 1970, Kosuth's series had progressed to the Seventh Investigation which was comprised of a series of "propositions." This proposition #8 was created for a show at Galerie Daniel Templon in Paris from November-December 1970 where this limited edition booklet was dispersed across several desks in the gallery space. The text entirely in French is composed of excerpts from unattributed texts about WWII (the French Resistance, the annexation of Alsace and Lorraine, the siege of Stalingrad, etc.) and a final page which is an alpha-numeric schematic seemingly related to the book's interior structure. Slight browning to margins of cover and a hand-written note of the artist and gallery top right (which has been on every copy we have seen) and staples are slightly rusted else VG+. Rare,

Chicago: Museum of Contemporary Art, 1969
Standard 12inch LP record in original (NOT a later repoduction) gatefold sleeve which was released on the occasion of the title exhibition which was abandoned because of "technical difficulties". The record contains the phone calls of participating artists Siah Armajani, Richard Artschwager, John Baldessari, Iain Baxter, Mel Bochner, George Brecht, Jack Burnham, James Lee Byars, Robert Cumming, Francoise Dallegret, Jan Dibbets, John Giorno, Robert Grosvenor, Hans Haacke, Richard Hamilton, Dick Higgins, Davi Det Hompson, Robert Huot, Alain Jacquet, Edward Kienholz, Joseph Kosuth, Les Levine, Sol LeWitt, Robert Morris, Bruce Nauman, Claes Oldenburg, Dennis Oppenheim, Richard Serra, Robert Smithson, Guenther Uecker, Stan Van Der Beek, Bernar Venet, Frank Lincoln Viner, Wolf Vostell, William Wegman, and William T. Wiley giving instructions to the MCA staff on how to execute their various pieces for this exhibition.

While it is possible to find some copies of the LP the gatefold sleeve is incredibly rare to find and any copies for sale are either sans sleeve or are a later facsimile reprint of it. This is the original and while there is some wear on all edges and one slit on the spine and some wear at top and bottom it is an incredible find.

The record is in VG+ condition. Clearly rare.
