Chapel Hill: Contempo, 1932, 1933

Uniformly 30 x 22cm, 8pp. Three separate numbers of this important literary magazine which reflected the American avant garde and regularly covered the Jazz age and European "imported" art (such as Dada). Ezra Pound was a contributing editor. Poems by Hector Rella, Marie Luhrs, Jules Romains, Rainer Maria Rilke and Boris Pasternak (in translation) and Vladimir Mayakovski and Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes (also from the Russian and the French respectively). Vol II Nr 5 has a long article "If Dada comes to America" by Samuel Putnam.

All copies are fragile, slightly browned and with edge wear and sadly the last of these three numbers is entirely torn down the spine but the other two are intact if with slightly rusted staples. There are also some former fold creases. Priced bearing in mind the condition problems. Scarce.

PRICE IS FOR ALL THREE ISSUES TOGETHER

Paris: la Comedie des Champs Elysees, 1924-25

16 x 12cm, 20pp plus blue wrappers. Programme for the title performance of this French farce written by the poet and author Romains who was a constant figure in Monnier's salon La Maison des Amis des Livres along with Fargue, Valery, Gide, Joyce, and Beach. Synopsis and cast list plus as traditional in theatre publications the usual large number of commercial adverts.

One of three plays produced at the theatre where the lead character Le Trouhadec (played by Jouvet) is a doctor who promotes false medical ideas and shows up the desire of humans to accept easy answers to problems rather than more trying alternatives. The plays were very popular and frequently restaged in the coming years. Very good.

he programme reproduces a three page letter from Copeau to Jouvet written in 1924 after the two had become friendly rivals in the Parisian theatre (Copeau having founded the hugely successful Theatre and School of the Vieux-Colombier where he had worked closely with Jules Romains - but by 1924 the once popular venue had failed and was closing and Copeau was forced to tour and give lectures to raise funds. Jouvet asked Copeau to work with him at the Chaps Elysees but the latter declined). Very good.
