Paris: Galerie 93, 1956

19 x 14.2cm, 12pp plus two b/w plates hors text after abstract reliefs by Domela and original wrappers. First edition of this deluxe exhibition catalogue which contains texts written in 1943 and 1956 by Kandinski and Brion repectively. Additionally this has laid in an original abstract lithograph signed by Domela.

One of 500 numbered copies issued, this copy is somewhat perplexing in that it has signs of water damage in the book (minor stains on wrappers and bizarrely one of the plates bound in hors texte has been inserted in duplicate but the two pages (due to the paper employed) have stuck together when the book was damp and there are paper abrasions on the second duplicate page where the pages have been taken apart - however this duplication by error means that the second damaged page could easily be removed and no one would be the wiser (but we never do this preferring to sell books in the state we found them and allowing the purchaser to make these conservation decisions for themselves). The laid in lithograph is fine and shows no damage whatsoever other than some minor browning on one side that is hardly noticeable.

Berlin: Verlag Der Sturm, 1919

25 x 16.5cm, 30pp. Original blue wrappers printed yellow. With seventeen plates (including tipped-in colour frontispiece by Chagall and a small b/w block print by Kandinsky as frontispiece) reproducing work by Kandinsky, Marc, Severini, Leger, Klee, Molzahn, Muche, Schwitters and others. A reprinted essay from Der Sturm as a separate pamphlet intended to promote those artists in favour at the magazine.

Walder was in fact the pseudonym of Georg Lewin, gallerist and the founder of Der Sturm and promoter of German and other expressionism. A VG example with only minor browning to the internal pages (printed on cheap paper) and some browning around the extremities of the oversize wrappers but this is as good an example as one is likely to find.

Copenhagen: Linien, 1937

20.4 x 12.4cm, 32pp plus printed wrappers. Exhibition catalogue. Asger Jorn first joined the Linien group in Copenhagan in 1935 at the age of 21 after a period of creating mostly mediocre works of a realist nature. This established group of painters and sculptors were a melange of post-surrealist artists who painted in an abstract style which immediately influenced Jorn's expressionistic work. This exhibition contained works by members of Linien along some works by painters whom they regarded as their influences. Nine such works are noted herein and reproduced in b/w by Sophie Tauber Arp, Hans Arp, van Doesberg, Ernst, Kandinsky, Klee, Miro, Mondrian, Banguy, Bentsen, Hull and joined from the Linien group Olafsson, Olafsson, Heerup, Ferlov, Bille, Graumann, Dryberg-Petersen, Jacobsen and Asger O. Jorgensen (Jorn) himself. The latter earlier incarnation of Jorn displayed 7 works according to the catalogue (price for each was 250 kroner). Later Jorn (in the 1950s) was shown this catalogue and he wrote on the first internal page "ma premiere expedition a Copenhague/Jorn" in blue ink and on the page with his exhibition listing he crossed out parts of the printed name "Asger O. Jorgensen" and signed his name as Jorn above it. Sadly this book has become damp in the past and ink from the red printed card wrappers has leeched through the pages of the book. However as a flaw it is not so very terrible, all pages are easily read (red?) and visible - overall, with that noted flaw, it is in very good condition apart from rust on the staples. A rarity made even more so by Jorn's intervention.
