27 x 22 cm, 236pp. Original wrappers. A single early number of this archeological, ethnographic and arts magazine which has articles by E. Nordenskild (on Seurat), C.T. Seltman in archaic sculptures in the Cyclades, a general article by George Bataille on the human figure (which interestingly for the author of the Story of the Eye has a section discussing the horror (which Bataille perceives) of the human eye along with an eye bulging illustration of Joan Crawford's popping globes and C. Einstein on the Gravures d'Hercule Seghers and an early, if far from extensive (2pp) article by Michel Leiris (written during his surrealist period) on Alberto Giacometti. Illustrations (eighty-one of them) throughout in b/w including Salvador Dali, Giocometti (four sculptural works printed fullsheet hors texte), Picasso, Seghers and others including many images of black citizens of the USA and native africans. Fine example of a pretty scarce document.

18 x 12cm, 280pp. Original wrappers. First edition (despite the fictive mention of being the "3eme edition") of the first volume of Leiris' autobiography (that despite having already written L'Age d'homme in 1939 as an earlier autobiographical work).

The work is honest in the extreme with many shameful episodes in the author's life recounted truthfully or at least without any obvious guilt or concern. This copy has the original publisher's bandeau still extant - proclaiming Leiris as the "laureat du prix des critiques 1956". Minor spine wear otherwise very good.

Very good.

Three separate numbers of this wartime clandestine revue. Nrs 10 and 11 are uniformly 25.5 x 20.5cm, 4pp, nr 18 is 8pp. Long propaganda articles and poetic patriotic musings by many of the radical writers of the time including surrealists written mostly under pseudonym ("Argonne" is clearly Louise Aragon for example) and others also contributing to both group and individual articles included Claude Morgan, Paul Eluard, Jean Paulhan, Jean Paul Sartre and Michel Leiris. These copies are browned due to the cheap paper employed and with minor wear around edges but overall very good indeed.

All copies of Les Lettres Francais are rare especially in good condition. (Not to be confused with the exiled revue of the same name published by Roger Callois in South America).

14 x 11.5cm, 68pp. Original printed wrappers (designed for the series by Mario Prassinos). First edition of this signature immediate post-war work by Leiris. One of 600 numbered examples on velin blanc from a total issue of 625. A very good+ copy. Scarce.

Leiris had been an early surrealist (introduced to the group by Masson) but by the late 1920s he had moved away from Breton and along with Bataille,Blanchot, Klossowski and  Caillois founded the College de Sociologie and turned to his fascination to anthopology and travel; the date here (20 juin 1933) is a little before the completion his important L'Afrique Fanntome.

This letter (written on thin transparent paper) is a tatty with minor paper loss at the very end and top right and has been repaired at some point with tape - but offers a clear  insight into the two writer's post-sexual relationship.

21.6 x 13.5cm, 192pp. Original wrappers. First edition of this profound monograph by Leiris. As an envoi to UNESCO, he followed upon his long-lived socio-anthropological interests, which he initially undertook simultaneously with the establishment (together with Bataille, et. al.) of the post-Surrealist 'College de Sociologie'. There is no 'du tete' or large paper example noted per this title. A close to fine copy. Scarce.

26.8 x 21cm. 4pp. Black on white. First edition of this open letter condemning the bourgeois appropriation of Rimbaud on the occasion of an unveiling of a monument to the gunrunner, pimp and poet. Signed in print by Aragon, Arp, Baron, Breton, Desnos, Duhamel, Eluard, Ernst, Leiris, Masson, Naville, Nouge, Peret, Prevert, Queneau, Tanguy and Unik amongst others. Slightly browned otherwise very good. Scarce early tract.
