27.9 x 21.6cm, 1pp mimeograph (aniline purple) leaflet for the all-night concert held at the Hardware Poet's Playhouse, NYC, on May 11, 1963 as part of the month-long Yam Festival

The festival was conceived by George Brecht and Robert Watts, who invited Charlotte Moorman to organise a concert of new and experimental music as part of a continuous performance on May 11-12 ('YamDay') featuring about 140 works by 37 artists. The flyer lists the concert performers (as well as Moorman, they included Earl eBrown, Joseph Byrd, Max Neuhaus, and the dancer, Yvonne Rainer), and the compositions she chose (work by John Cage, Morton Feldman, Joseph Byrd, Christian Wolff, Edgard Varèse, and Luciano Berio).

N.p. (NYC): n.p. (Foundation for Contemporary Performance Arts), n.d. (1963)
23.5 x 16cm, 2pp. Black on cream “composer’s notes for various new music works including the premier of Feldman’s Vertical Thoughts, The Straits of Magellan, For Franz Kline, The Swallows of Salangan all by Feldman and Brown’s December 1952, Pentathis, Available Forms I and the premier of From Here - all written by the composers.

On October 11, 1963, the Foundation for Contemporary Performance Arts held its first publicly sponsored event. The performance, “Music of Orchestra and Chorus by Morton Feldman and Earle Brown," was conceived of by Foundation co-founder John Cage as an opportunity for Feldman and Brown to present four works for a large ensemble. This is a scarce documentation for the event and has a contemporaneous pencil note “Wxxxx (unreadable) at slow tempi and with long rests & durations” in an unknown hand.

Previously folded and some sun damage to left of the front but a wealth of information about this event and rare.

NYC, Judson Hall, 1963
28 x 7cm, 6pp (single sheet) b/w leaflet for a series of six concerts of new music. Works by Earle Brown, John Cage, Morton Feldman, Charlotte Moorman, La Monte Young, Max Neuhaus, Frederic Rzewski, David Tudor and Nicholas Zumbra were performed over a period of one month. Other works included Giuseppe Chiari and Toshi Ichiyanagi. These concerts evolved into (and were de facto the first of) the annual Avant Garde festivals that Moorman organised - an event that eventually became a massive undertaking with 100s of participants and unfolding works in all manner of media not only music. Folded - as issued - very scarce document.

NYC: Carl Fischer Concert Hall, n.d. (1952)

9.9 x 21.2cm, 1pp. Announcement card (typographic, b/w) for this concert by Tudor. The card notes that the first programme will included works by Earle Brouwn, John Cage and Christian Wolff and the second programme by Pierre Boulez, Olivier Messiaen, Morton Feldman and Stefan Wolfe. The card notes “many first New York performances on both programmes”. Importantly this concert marked only the second ever performance of John Cage’s 4’33” - preceded only by a prior outing in Woodstock on August 29, 1952 - this performance being only 8 months later. 4’33” is a key moment in the history of new music - challenging the very notion of what music is. This is the first and only documentation available for this historic moment - there was no publicity material for the Woodstock concert. Fine condition. Clearly very rare.
