Paris: Images Obliques, 1979

22 x 14cm, 112pp plus cloth covered boards with foil stamping. Published soon after the death of the surrealist, transvestite photographer and painter who, on deciding his life was no longer worth living, placed a note on the door of his flat before shooting himself: It read: ";I am dead. The key is with the concierge."

The book consists of 100 b/w reproductions of Molinier's erotic and wholly believable self-portraits as a woman (occasionally with real women and female adult puppets as props). An unnumbered copy aside from the first edition of 43 copies (33 + 10 du tete). There is an handwritten dedication by a previous owner at the half-title but this is otherwise a very good copy of an elusive and desirable title.

Paris: Les Soleil Noir, 1968

18 x 13.5cm, 88pp. B/w offset textual illustrations by Pierre Alechinsky. Pictorial card wrappers designed by Alechinsky. First trade issue of this frenetic Surrealist work by Mansour. The abstract designed by Alechinsky at once undermine and add a subjective edge to the proceedings with every page illustrated on the upper half of the book. There is also on the inner French fold a surrealist drawing of the author by Pierre Molinier. A close to fine example. This copy one of 1,750 on offset sirene.

Geneva: Letu Editeur, 1979

27 x 21.5cm. 78pp. 36 full-page reproductions of works by the artist, 25 of which are in color. B/w frontispiece photo-portrait of Molinier. Original glossy wrappers in colour, after a painting by Molinier.

First edition of this attractive monograph, detailing the Surrealist-affiliate's paintings. Molinier's fetishistic gender-bending photographic self-portraits were the basis for many of his painted works. However the interest in the photo pieces has somewhat obscured his intended, more public legacy. A fine copy of this colourful and informative reference.

Bordeaux: s.p. (Molinier), n.d. (1959)

13.5 x 9cm, 2pp b/w artist designed postcard depicting the drawing of Les femmes actuelles (which Moliner also turned into a well known oil painting). The reverse of the card has a unsigned text in Molinier's very formal handwriting: &quot;Je m'offre a vos crelegues (? hard to read) Sympathie L'exposition Internationale du Surrealisme Paris 1959 - 1960&quot; and is addressed to a Monsieur C. Remongin, 14 rue Henner, Paris 9.

The card was one used by Molinier to promote his Atelier Du Grenier St Pierre and contains his MDVETDCS monogram (which he often incorporated into his paintings in lieu of a signature). The reverse of the card is a little browned but this is otherwise a wonderful small item and typical<br />of the artist's obsession with the female form. The reference in the note is to Molinier's participation in the highly significant EROS exhibition - the last great international surrealist event and the first collective surrealist show where Molinier exhibited. Moliner as an old man committed suicide by hanging himself in his apartment although rather decently leaving a note on his door alerting the police to his action in order to stop his female concierge from having the terrible experience of finding his dead body.

Few primary documents from Molinier come on the market in part due to the enthusiasm of one particular French collector who gained much of Molinier's archive soon after his death and has (to his credit) kept it mostly intact. An unique item.
