London: London Gallery Editions, 1947

21 x 18cm, 40pp. Original red and blue wrappers. The exhibition catalogue for this important exhibition of cubist works as shown at the London Gallery organised by ELT Mesens and filled with works by Penrose, Lee Miller, Gistac Kahnweiler and others. Foreword by Robert Melville and contributions translated by Mesens from Apollinaire, Breton and lengthy notes also by Mesens. B/w illustrations throughout and twenty-six black and white plates after works by Picasso, Braque, Leger, Gris, De La Fresnaye, Picabia, Marcoussis and Masson. Placing cubism at the centre of avant garde development the catalogue also critiques the movement from a later surrealist position - Braque being oh so slightly dismissed (especially by Breton) and Picasso regarded as part of the inner circle (which given his adherence to surrealism and communism post-cubism is not so surprising). A couple of faint coffee cup stains on the front covers, which do not detract that greatly, else VG. Scarce.

London: Calder and Boyars.1970

22 x 16cm, 64pp. Original semi-stiff pictorial wrappers. First edition thus of this translation into English of Picasso's drama first published in 1945 in France (soon after the liberation of Paris). The title page carried a full page inscription from Penrose to Joyce Reeves: 'all to please Joycey with love Roland.' together with an abstract drawing of a phallus in coloured pencils (with a major stylistic debt to Miro).

Joyce Reeves was Penrose's secretary and lover. Wrappers a little worn, else a very good copy. An important association copy of this book with an interestingly disguised erotic content.

Paris: CAL, 1961
20.5 x 18cm, 456pp. Pictorial cloth covered boards with printed reproduction and titles. Place ribbon. First French language edition of Penrose's life and work of Picasso translated by Celia Bertin and released in 4,645 numbered copies of which this is one. Profusely illustrated throughout in b/w and colours. This copy is wonderfully adorned with an original full page drawing in red, green and blue crayon by Picasso as a dedication. The drawing is a bunch of flowers and is signed very clearly at the top right and dated bottom left: "Paris 8.11.1962" also in the artist's hand. The flowers incorporate the large dedication "Para Pauline" into a banner around the bunch of posies. The clarity of the line is astonishing - while clearly drawn with no effort on the artist's part - a thing of beauty is created facing the first title page. Fine condition. Unique. Image on request.
