ANDERSEN’S PERFORMANCE OF LA MONTE YOUNG’S PIECE WITH THE HAY AND THE PIANO. 1977?

9 x 12.5cm, vintage black and white image of the artist performing a La Monte Young work – “Piano Piece for David Tudor #1” This was the first of three pieces dedicated to David Tudor, under whom Young studied for a year. The instructions specify a performer to “feed” the piano: “Bring a bale of hay and a bucket of water onto the stage for the piano to eat and drink. The performer may then feed the piano or leave it to eat by itself. If the former, the piece is over after the piano has been fed. If the latter, it is over after the piano eats or decides not to.” Somewhat out of focus because of the use of a rather basic camera. Contemporaneous handwritten text on the reverse in pencil noting artists and performance and that the piano “did not eat….”. Date and place unknown – because of provenance of other photographs found at same time perhaps 1977? VG.
