NYC/Stuttgart: Solomon Guggenheim Museum/Verlag Gerd Hatje, 1988
31 x 25cm. 140pp plus printed card covers. 55 colour reproductions (with some fold-outs) of series of canvasses and prints of Mercedes Benz cars commissioned by the company from the pop artist. Far from Warhol’s finest work – the multiple, colourised treatment of the Benz Patent Motorcar of 1886 is particularly inappropriate, notable only to see how far Warhol would compromise his work for money – which by the end was quite a lot and only to be matched by Arman who also did stuff for car companies. Fine copy.
