Pulheim: Stadt Pulheim, 2014

29.5 x 31cm, single folded sheet that opens out to 88.5 x 62cm. An artist’s book which opens to a full sheet poster displaying the title “house” at Haupstrasse 85a in Pulheim.  This house is not what it seems – it is a synagogue, one which survived the Nazi purges of the Jewish faith but here with agreement of the congregation Schneider has removed every trace of the Jewish religion from the building effectively making the synagogue “invisible”.

It is easy to misunderstand this work – it is true that Schneider has made other things “disappear” but his interest here is political and anti-fascist. He has done the very thing that the Nazis wanted but in that act he is bringing to attention the evil absurdity of the fascist project of removing Judaism from the world.

The book has texts in German and English and two full colour images of the building as well as the huge inner poster. In original plastic sleeve as issued. VG+ although a former price sticker is still in place on the back sheet.
