KATHE KOLLWITZ. MAPPE. 1923.

£175.00

Munchen: Georg D.W. Collwey, n.d. (1923)

43 x 32cm printed folder (with glued on reproduction of a self-portrait) content of 12 duotone prints (including one double page) after works by Kathe Kollwitz all tipped onto on 42 x 30cm thin black boards. The title page has a portrait of the artist in b/w tipped on and, verso, a brief family history along with another small reproduction of a work tipped on.

Internally very good with the folder a little worn and with some damage to top and bottom of spine with no paper loss.

An interesting period monograph produced by the artist’s family while Kollwitz was at the height of her success having become the first woman to be elected a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts – membership of which rewarded the artist with not only an income but a studio and other benefits. The rise of Nazism ended her financial support but because of her international fame she was mostly left alone by the Fascists despite her open support for Communism.
