Paris: CAL, 1961
20.5 x 18cm, 456pp. Pictorial cloth covered boards with printed reproduction and titles. Place ribbon. First French language edition of Penrose’s life and work of Picasso translated by Celia Bertin and released in 4,645 numbered copies of which this is one. Profusely illustrated throughout in b/w and colours. This copy is wonderfully adorned with an original full page drawing in red, green and blue crayon by Picasso as a dedication. The drawing is a bunch of flowers and is signed very clearly at the top right and dated bottom left: “Paris 8.11.1962” also in the artist’s hand. The flowers incorporate the large dedication “Para Pauline” into a banner around the bunch of posies. The clarity of the line is astonishing – while clearly drawn with no effort on the artist’s part – a thing of beauty is created facing the first title page. Fine condition. Unique. Image on request.
