Le Mejan, Editions des Actes Sud, 1996
19 x 10 cm, 72pp plus wrappers artist’s book. 39 b/w photographic reproductions and 2 maps and one b/w table of Sabbat sunrises and sunsets. The photographs, by Calle, are of the Eruv – a wire around a Jewish habitat or town which allows the carrying of objects outside the household (else disallowed by the Torah). (All religions find their compromises with practicalities) but Calle uses this as guide to explosing the city. Within the text the artist pleads for “des habitants de Jerusalem, israeliens et palestiniens de l’emmener dans un lieu public ayant leurs yeux, un caractere prive.” Text mostly in French with some Hebrew. Fine condition.
