MAP NOT TO INDICATE. 1967. SIGNED, NUMBERED & DATED BY ATKINSON.

£850.00

N.p. (Coventry): n.p. (Art & Language), 1967
52.5 x 59.5cm, b/w linotype on paper displaying one of the early prints by Art & Language – a map of the United States which has no areas on it other than an outline of Iowa and Kentucky (relative to each other). The text under the map indicates that the map’s purpose is to “not indicate” places such as Canda, James Bay, Ontario, Quebec etc etc. The map is therefore an “unmap” – its purpose is antithetical to a more typical map and in some sense defines what a map is and isn’t. This work is signed in pencil by Terry Atkinson and numbered 1 out of II artist’s proofs and dated 1967. The work is mounted on a backing card and there is sadly some brown residue over the text (see photograph) probably from some brown packing tape and a very faint vertical crease. We have priced this rarity thus to account for the damage but it is hard to find item.
