PRESS PHOTOGRAPH OF ELIZABETH ECKFORD CHATS TO TWO CLASSMATES DURING A FIRE DRILL AT CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL, LITTLE ROCK SEPT 26TH 1957

£95.00

18 x 21cm, b/w vintage AP Wire press photograph printed in 1957. The image shows Elizabeth Eckford one of nine black students who had to be daily escorted into Central High School by State Troopers after a successful court battle to end educational segregation in Arkansas. The revealing image hints at some discord as while two of the students are happy to talk to Elizabeth others appear to be shunning her during the fire drill by turning their backs to her. There is a photographic legend on the back of the photograph which is scotch taped down and a copyright rubber stamping and hand written size measurements for a paste-down and several date stamps: “Sept 26 1957”. Overall VG+ condition although the photograph is slightly rippled. Provenance: part of a group of press photographs decommissioned from the Seattle Times Library.
