New York: VVV, n.d. (1942)
20.5 x 14cm, 1pp folded size opening out into an upside down “T” shape.
The advance announcement for the US surrealist journal on which Breton sat as one of editors along with Robert Motherwell, Matta, Max Ernst and William Carlos Williams. Four small b/w reproductions after Weegee, Ernst and Man Ray and a detailed poetic explanation of the choice of name: “V”; is for “double victory” over all that is opposed to the emancipation of the spirit. The reproductions were designed to be torn off and distributed but this copy is still intact albeit the fold line is cleanly torn – otherwise a very good copy of a fragile and essential document.
