NYC: Barbara Gladstone, 1988
26.5 x 19.5cm, unpaginated (50pp). Pictorial card covers. The first artists’ book by Richard Prince which contained colour images along with a broken up text by Prince sited between the photographs of paintings, adverts, jokes and studio shots. Prince’s strategy of appropriation is accumulated here into a maelstrom of commercialised design, celebrity reportage and a love of American gadgets. The book is in essence an antithesis of Ruscha’s LA Bland style with every reproduction offering a sexual thrill emulating from the bright dayglo advertising colours and close-ups of seductive car bonnets and grills. Very minor chipping to edges of card covers other wise VG+. Rare.
