ROBERT MORRIS SCULPTURE. 1966.

Los Angeles: Dwan Gallery, 1966
55 x 71cm, offset on semi-opaque paper (drafting paper) with a minimal design by the artist (overlapping triangles). This was one of Morris’ earliest shows (his first solo show was at the NY Green Gallery in 1963 but he did not exhibit much after that) and the year in which he really came to prominence with articles in various art journals including Artforum. Here he showed in the soon-to-be-closed LA base for the Dwan which later moved (along with John Weber) to show only in New York.
This is a remarkably scarce item but is in poor condition and requires some restoration as it is folded into eight panels (leaving creases on the paper), has some further wear and tear around the edges including obvious scuffs on the paper which is very susceptible to such damage and has had some water damage in the past leaving a red ink stain (which could be washed out) and rippling over the left hand side. That being said few examples of this item survive and a good conservator could bring this back to life (which is what it deserves). Priced thus.
