ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG WHITE PAINTINGS. 1968.

£395.00

NYC: Leo Castelli, 1968

42.5 x 42.5cm, 2pp b/w exhibition poster (offset lithograph) – with recto a full sheet image of a rather stiff looking Robert Rauschenberg in front of one of his huge “white paintings” produced (along with “black paintings”) in 1951 (the image probably taken at the Black Mountain Collage)

Those white paintings, however, were later recycled (by his assistant Brice Maden) and shown in this 1968 exhibition under different titles.

On the rear of the poster is the text running along the bottom of the sheet “White Paintings 1951 Robert Rauschenberg Oct. 12 – 27 Leo Castelli 4 E. 77, NYC”. The poster has been folded into four and the creases are apparent with a tear at the cross section and a couple of small closed tears at the ends of the vertical fold but this is very very rare and over 50 years old and in remarkable condition (the paper is still quite white).

We originally misidentified this poster and are grateful to Susan Davidson for correcting us.
