Weiner was commissioned in 1999 to produce a public art work for New York “he introduced 19 manhole covers to Manhattan “ each carrying the message: "IN DIRECT LINE WITH ANOTHER AND THE NEXT". Placement mirrored the stars above in the shape of 3 constellations including the Great Bear. Given the geographical location of the work's sale (Glasgow, Scotland) during a period of political debate over Scottish independence; it is tempting to see the work as a comment on English imperialism over their Northern neighbours.
