20.5 x 25.5cm, b/w vintage press photograph printed in 1968. The image (14 x 25cm) is a portrait of the Black Panther leader smoking a cigarette alongside his Attorney Charles Gary “during a 10th floor jail cell press conference called in advance of his trial for the alleged murder of the white policeman John Frey during a gun fight. During the press conference Newton claimed his jailers had attempted to ‘break his spirit’.” This was the first of three different trials Newton faced on the charges. This wire photograph has a date stamp on the back: “July 22 1968” and handwritten in blue ink “Huey Newton”. VG+ condition although there is a small diagonal crease top left on the print. Provenance: part of a group of press photographs decommission from the Seattle Times Library.
