PRESS PHOTOGRAPH OF HUEY NEWTON IN LUXURY PENTHOUSE APARTMENT – FEB 1971

£85.00

20.5 x 25.5cm, b/w vintage press photograph printed in 1971. The image (15 x 24cm) is a portrait of the Black Panther leader sitting in a “$700 per month penthouse overlooking Oakland’s Lake Merritt” awaiting his second trial for the alleged manslaughter of the white policeman John Frey during a gun fight. The legend also notes Newton’s claim that the penthouse is “like a prison” and that the seven-man Panther Central Committee had decided he should stay there for ‘security reasons’ as there had been death threats to him. This wire photograph has a date stamp on the back: “FEB 21 1971”. VG+ condition. Provenance: part of a group of press photographs decommission from the Seattle Times Library.
