The Scottish Parliament is show overlaid with red “x”s - the postcard was issued in a small number of copies during the period when Bellingham took a break from making his major work TURNOUT at the Heart Gallery, Edinburgh where he re-wrote the entire number of Xs cast in the Scottish 2003 Scottish parliamentary election by hand. "Abstention" is a counterpart to the "Turnout” project and represents the 50.7% of people who did not vote during the 2003 election.

15 x 10.2cm, 32pp plus printed card covers. Artist's book from Scottish artist, David Bellingham that solely consists of 4,668 reproductions of hand drawn crosses and an illustration of a ballot box.
There are strictly 500 hand-numbered copies of this book - aside from one unique book (no. 1) within the edition which corrects the entire number of crosses to exactly represent the total number of votes cast in Scotland during the May 5th 2005 General Election (2,333,882).
Conceptual work and/or concrete poem, this is a peon to democracy and a metaphor of the substantial effort required in maintaining openness in society.  If ever there was time to remind ourselves of the importance of our pluralist societies, it is now.

Artist's book by the Scottish artist which displays his fascination with measurement, and the most minimal elements of discourse i.e. the letter or individual word. At his best Bellingham takes visual poetry and brings it into the sphere of conceptual art. One of 1,500 copies. Fine....

The tradition of remembrance of the "Gun Powder Plot" where Guy Fawkes planned to destroy the British parliament as a rebellion against the Protestant leadership. The word EMBER is shown in red on the card within the NOVEMBER - a reference to those bonfires. VG+.
