NYC: Carl Fischer Concert Hall, n.d. (1952)
9.9 x 21.2cm, 1pp. Announcement card (typographic, b/w) for this concert by Tudor. The card notes that the first programme will included works by Earle Brouwn, John Cage and Christian Wolff and the second programme by Pierre Boulez, Olivier Messiaen, Morton Feldman and Stefan Wolfe. The card notes “many first New York performances on both programmes”. Importantly this concert marked only the second ever performance of John Cage’s 4’33” – preceded only by a prior outing in Woodstock on August 29, 1952 – this performance being only 8 months later. 4’33” is a key moment in the history of new music – challenging the very notion of what music is. This is the first and only documentation available for this historic moment – there was no publicity material for the Woodstock concert. Fine condition. Clearly very rare.
