XEROX BOOK. 1968. FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE AND FAMOUS CONCEPTUAL ART BOOK.

NYC: Seth Siegelaub & John W. Wendler, 1968 30 x 21cm, unpaginated. Original wrappers. Illustrated throughout with Xeroxed work by each of the seven artists - Carl Andre, Robert Barry, Douglas Huebler, Joseph Kosuth, Sol LeWitt, Robert Morris, and Lawrence Weiner. Siegelaub invited the seven artists to participate in a project that soon became well known as 'the Xerox book'. Siegelaub’s idea was to transfer the physical space of an exhibition onto the pages of a book. He asked the seven artists to each contribute 25 pages of artwork produced with the help of a Xerox machine. A very good + copy of this rare and important publication.

PROSPECT 69. 1969.

Dussedorf: Stadtische Kunsthalle, 1969 36 x 26cm, 56pp. Tabloid newspaper. The exceptionally important exhibition catalogue for the defining exhibition of conceptual art in Europe - as curated and edited by Fishcher and Strelow although many other German and US galleries participated in the event. The catalogue is written in three languages - German, English and French and has black and white images as well as the original stripe pagework by Daniel Buren in blue across the centre fold. The galleries who took part included Ace (Los Angeles), Art & Project (Amsterdam), L'attico (Rome), Eugenia Butler (Los Angeles), Bykert (New York), Dwan (New York), Fischbach (New York), Toni Gerber (Bern), Yvon Lambert (Paris), Mickery (Loenersloot), Seiquer (Madrid), Ileana Sonnabend (Paris), Sperone (Torino), Wide White Space (Antwerpen), Howard Wise (New York) and Seth Siegelaub (New York). There is also an important text by Seth Siegelaub who interviewed Robert Barry, Douglas Heubler, Lawrence Weiner and Joe Kosuth as his own contribution to the show. This copy is in very good condition with (as always) general wear and small cuts to the cheap newsprint employed throughout and along the spine and some yellowing of the paper due to the passing of over 40 years. As almost always found it has also been folded for storage - but very few pristine copies of this rare document are found.

ART-LANGUAGE. 1970 – 1978. A CONTINUOUS RUN OF 10 NUMBERS

Art + Language ART-LANGUAGE Vol. 1 Nr 1 Chipping Norton: Art & Language, February 1970 21.5 x 13.5cm, 32pp. Original card covers. First edition of this inaugural number of the important conceptual art journal with articles by Sol LeWitt, Dan Graham, Lawrence Weiner, David Bainbridge and Michael Baldwin. LeWitt's Sentences on conceptual art. Graham's Poem-Schema and Weiner's Statements had all been previously published elsewhere but being in a single journal allowed their views to be compared - LeWitt's 10th sentence is "Ideas alone can be works of art: they are in a chian of development that may eventually find other form. All ideas may not be made physical." - compare that with Weiner's more famous and more readily quoted dictum regarding the requirement that "1. an artist may construct a work 2. a work may be fabricated 3. a work need not be built. A reasonable assumption is that each being equal and consistant with the intent of an artist the decision as to condition rests within the needs of the receiver upon the occasion of receivership." A VG + to near fine copy. As ever there are condition problems here especially with the tabloid numbers which are creased and torn in places due to the cheap paper used as well as significant browning but these are hard to find items. The earlier book-style numbers are in better condition but with some soft creases to covers and Spring 1972 has some staining on the top right of the cover which has intruded into the first few pages. That said runs of this number are rarely encountered and there are very few copies of this journal to be found online even singly. Price is for all 12 numbers as a collection
