NYC: Gagosian Gallery, 2002
37 x 27cm, 62pp. Rough cheesecloth-covered boards with foilstamped titles. The first edition of this monograph which displays twenty-seven four-color illustrations consisting of high-quality reproductions of the artist’s series of paintings which were first shown at the Venice Biennale in 2001 when Twombly was the USA’s official representative. The works here depicts the 16th century sea battle raged by the combined European forces under Venetian leadership against the Ottoman invasion with Twombly creating an elegy in scribbed paint in homage of the heroicism invoked by the battle. A near fine example and one of very few signed copies available.
