Little Sparta: Wild Hawthorn Press, 1991
9.9 x 8.2cm, 4pp. A painting which may well be a potato print beloved of young childen shows a blue and red pattern which could be seen as a paper crown worn at a Xmas dinner. Internal to the card Finlay notes:

Shepherds - Bath Towels
Angels - Sheets
and below "(Instructions for a school play)".

The painting therefore can be read as also displaying the bath towels (with patterns) for use to make costumes for a school nativity play. Angels all in white obviously need sheets that do not have patterns. Perhaps Finlay is displaying his identification more with the shepherds (a job after all that he did as a young man).
This example has a hand written note on the back cover "Happy Christmas from Ian" in thick red felt tipped pen and is joint with the origina plain white envelope that also has writing by Finlay; "Edward". Both VG+

20.5 x 16 x 2.6cm, two part printed cardboard box content of a 17.7 x 12.5cm, 14pp (recto only) leporello booklet which has 14 images of the artist's cut out and cheaply made figures. One of only 500 copies released. Similar to the artist's grotesques where assemblage sculptures were made from household objects, these figures are mostly dancing skeletons in white against a flat black background.
There is a colophon card in black on brown also inserted into the box. VG+. Scarce.

3 x 4cm, black on white adhesive label with the text: "ONE OF A THOUSAND ARTWORKS BY JONATHAN MONK" printed on them. This is one of 1,000 such sticky labels produced each as an artwork. A very early object/print multiple by the artist.

17.5 x 13cm, original b/w silver gelatine print showing Boltanski's installation in the Carnegie International which is signed on the back.
One of only 100 such books and photographs as a deluxe edition. Both VG++.

Paris, Jean Daviot et Bernard Marcadé, automne 1991, 35 x 30 cm (opens out to 70 x 60cm), 2pp. A single number of this artist's publications which is dedicated to a single artist - here, obviously, Boltanski who reproduces two pages from the Spanish "detective" magazine "El Caso Criminal".
This is one of 200 signed and numbered examples aside from the larger run of the magazine. Folded as issued else VG+.

Hartford: Wadsworth Atheneum, 1991 25.4 x 20cm, b/w silver gelatine press photograph taken by John Ravenal in 1990 in Little Sparta and distributed for the exhibition Ian Hamilton Finlay Matrix 116. The gate behind him reads Julie et Saint Preux - a reference to Rousseau's 1761 novel "Julie, or the New Heloise" where the two protagonists are lovers at the behest of Julie's unknowing husband who invites St Preux to educate his wife.
